The Administrative Court of the Dakahleya governorate issued a verdict that will prevent anyone from Egypt's ex-ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) from running in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The court order prohibits the Dakahleya elections committee from accepting candidate applications for parliament elections under the name of those who are proven to have been members of the NDP.
The court ruling relied on the verdict issued by Egypt's Administrative Court, which ordered the dismantling of Egypt's 30-year ruling party following the 25 January uprising.
The verdict might pave the way for similar lawsuits against ex-NDP members in the rest of Egypt’s governorates, although whether the verdict can be applied to the rest of the governorates is still unclear.
Legal perspectives vary on whether the verdict is final or still subject to appeal.
