Egyptian military and police forces discovered anti-aircraft rockets and launching pads near the Suez Canal late Saturday, state-run Al-Ahram newspaper has reported.
The newspaper's website said the forces found four boxes including eight surface-to-air missiles and three launching pads at Abu Khalifa, 2km from the Suez Canal.
The report explained that workers at a nearby gypsum factory reported the discoveries to security authorities, and that the weapons were in good condition but information on the country of manufacture had been intentionally obliterated.
Security measures have been intensified in the area in search for possible perpetrators, Al-Ahram added.
The Sinai Peninsula and Suez Canal areas have been causing security headaches for Egyptian authorities since the outbreak of the 25 January revolution, with several arms caches being found by security forces.
On 18 August, unidentified gunmen, reportedly having crossed through Sinai, killed eight Israelis near the southern city of Eilat. Hours later, six Egyptian security officers were shot dead by Israeli forces in a border raid that Tel Aviv says was in pursuit of the Eilat attackers.
